BAM FANTASY CITY: URBAN HAIR PANDEMIC
The Prelude......
An ominous fog looms in the distance like the sum of history’s unanswered questions. A steady hiss of rumors decry that cities left in the wake of this fog have begun to sprout hairs. The fog slowly passes through the city, existing as nothing more than a faint convoy of billows. As time passes, the event is forgotten, and the thieving sameness of city life is restored. Gradually, as if the eyes have failed to focus, follicles are noticed underfoot and light from the sun and the moon reveals buildings covered in pubescence. The experience of the city is not blurry but fuzzy. Soft hairs, once subtle, have sprouted vigorously from the non-living surfaces that comprise the city. The hardscape is no longer hard, edges dissolve, the skyline no longer rigid. As years go by the city is thickly layered with plumes, pelts and locks—a sea of keratin giving way to new ecologies and technologies. The event creates a culture of both exhilaration and terror, a culture with an outcome unknown. The city of the future is hairy! Its silky undulating skyscrapers, stubbly streets and bearded facades flow forward as the playful antidote to the homogeneity of cities worldwide. Alas! Gone are the days of bald cities.
