The eco-masterplan for Venice, Italy was based on the creation of a natural filtering system to help regenerate avian and fish habitats depleted by the region's hundreds of years of urban use. A giant ring acting as a landscape and public space connector from the island of Murano to Venice acts as the ecological "sponge" encircling a plant and animal sanctuary within. Those regions of the bio-circle which encounter urban conditions on both Murano and Venice connect to the medieval open space networks, creating seamless transitions from the urban conditions to the picturesque, constructed nature conditions.
