Pumpkin Day Installation and Public Event
Ithaca, New York
On October 31 the day of Halloween, BAM created, for the Cornell architecture students, an event appropriately named Pumpkin Day. Students gather outside in the space between East Sibley and Rand Hall in the presence of a massive spiky neon orange target place on the ground. The pre-prepared pumpkins are smuggled into the library, and their hosts, position themselves at their respective windows, looking out at the crowd looking back at them in anticipation. People wait as tension mounts while librarians grow aware and suspicious from all the commotion coming from outside of the window. Then pumpkins are let loose, as the ‘pumpkin-tossers’ aim for the big neon target, the resulting composition as a due to the pumpkins intricate stuffings, is to say the least, stunning. However beautifully disgusting the work may be, the sound of the community screaming and laughing after each successive pumpkin is the true essence of Pumpkin Day.
